Preview
The financial services sector is a core pillar of every economy which serves as an intermediary to relocate funds from entities with a surplus to those with a deficit supply. Compared to other countries of similar income levels, Kenya’s financial services sector is considerably developed, with over 40 commercial banks, a range of non-bank financial institutions, numerous insurance companies and a robust stock exchange market. Kenya ranked 1st in mobile money transactions according to Bloomberg’s 2017 report, pointing to the economy’s ability to provide access to and usage of financial services among people excluded from formal finance.
Dating back to as far as the 1880s, the Kenyan Financial Services ecosystem has morphed dramatically over the last couple of years. The sector has witnessed significant increase levels of regulation, with institutions such as SASRA, CMA and IRA widening their reach. Other developments include the growth of mobile money services to include savings and credit facilities, the recently effected IFRS 9 and the emergence of technologies that threaten to replace human labour in financial institutions. However, no change has rocked the financial services sector and sparked debate as the recent interest rate capping law imposed on banks.
Cognizant of these factors of dynamism, the Institute has undertaken to tailor this year’s Financial Services Sector Conference towards stabilization and growth of the sector through comprehensive discussion of topics such as:
- The Advent of Mobile Money – Implications on Financial Reporting and Audit Functions, Digital Credit
- Improving Institutional Governance in Financial Services Sector
- Technology vs the Human Touch – What Happens to Professionals Now?
- The Effect of Stringent Regulation on the Sector
- Efficient Implementation of IFRS 9
- Understanding the Interest Rates Capping Saga and What to Expect
- The Role of Professionals in Countering Fraud
- Technological Disruptions and Cyber Security
Target Audience
Professionals in Saccos, Central Bank, Commercial Banks (Kenya Bankers Association), Capital Markets, Insurance Companies, Financial Services Regulators (CBK, SASRA, IRA, KBA), Stock Brokerage Firms, Compliance Professionals, Anti Money Laundering Professionals, and Pension Firms
