THE INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS OF KENYA
(ESTABLISHED UNDER THE ACCOUNTANTS ACT, LAWS OF KENYA)

THE 32ND ECONOMIC SYMPOSIUM
Theme: Leveraging on Technology & Innovation for Economic Growth
DATE: 21st – 23rd February 2024
VENUE: Safari Park Hotel & Casino, Thika Rd, Nairobi
TIME: 09:00am-03:30pm

OVERVIEW

African policymakers are currently facing a complex macroeconomic policy landscape that requires navigating multiple trade-offs. Specifically, monetary policy needs to tamper the inflationary pressure caused by supply shocks without impeding economic recovery. Fiscal policy faces the urge to manage debt sustainability along with protecting the most vulnerable. Furthermore, African countries need to harness the power of science, technology, and innovation to push economic growth to the next level and escape the middle-income trap. This will require revamping the nexus between educational policies, research & development, innovation, and economic policies, taking the shape of modern industrial policies that serve development through clear roadmaps and transparent objectives.

In addition, as Africa remains the continent that is most threatened by climate change and chronic food insecurity, science and technological innovation has the potential to improve energy transition, and increase food production, making it a vital area of focus for promoting sustainable economic growth.

The Kenya Economic growth remains modest, owing to heightened headwinds, including slower global growth and domestic interest-rate increases. We expect growth to accelerate in 2024-27, supported by structural reforms. However, a current-account deficit and a large external debt stock could expose Kenya to balance-of-payments stresses, if access to external financing continues to deteriorate.

It is against this background that the Institute has organized a three-day economic symposium. The Symposium will focus on the following topical areas:

1. Kenya’s macro-economic environment:
Economic Projections
• BETA Agenda – Hits & misses so far
2. Expenditure priorities: Addressing the Health and Education Sectors Challenges and Priorities
3. Current Tax Policies and their impact in economic development
4. Incentivizing Manufacturing and MSMEs as engines for Economic Growth
5. Managing the Interest, Exchange Rate & Inflation dynamics in Kenya
6. Affordable Housing: Unlocking Liquidity
7. Accountants’ contribution to Economic Development in Kenya
