Overview

Taxes come in a variety of forms and are also known by different names, such as duties, levies, tariffs, and charges. The commonly documented principles or characteristics that guide tax policy include equity, adequacy, simplicity, and neutrality. Taxation affects incomes and prices of goods and services, with individuals and businesses reacting differently in response to changes in income, and in relative prices, emanating from taxation.

The business environment rapidly changes with corresponding changes in tax policies. For taxpayers, the various measures that have been put in place and increased vigilance from the revenue authorities have heightened the need for tax compliance to fuel business continuity.  This has pushed many organizations to establish tax functions as one of the core functions since tax non-compliance has proofed a costly affair for many companies. Among the challenges associated with non-compliance includes unending tax disputes which have led to liquidation, unnecessary agency notices, huge tax demands and limited access to business opportunities especially where a tax compliance certificate is needed to close a business opportunity.

Consequently, an understanding of the various tax policies is critical for accountants and practicing members to ensure compliance and guide in decision making.  In Kenya we have various tax laws and requirements that require to be understood and complied with. It is against this background that the Institute has organized an upcoming virtual symposium to provide more insights on current tax principles. This workshop will help you gain more insights on tax principles in Kenya and highlight key tax developments.
