OVERVIEW

Compliance with Tax legislation has become a top agenda in determination of an Organization’s Risk Profile. An understanding of Tax Planning and Management measures and an awareness of the thin line between Tax Planning and Management & Tax Crimes is important if personnel involved in Tax Management is to be effective in minimizing an organization’s risk yet be effective at managing tax. All Senior Finance Personnel (Heads of Finance, Financial Controllers, Finance Managers and other Senior Finance staff), Risk & Compliance Officers, Internal Audit staff and other decision-makers must have an understanding of their organization’s compliance requirements, risk profile and exposures as a basis of acquiring requisite skills to effectively manage tax and mitigate tax exposures.

In many low-income countries, tax revenues remain far below levels needed to provide citizens with basic services or make meaningful progress toward the UN’s sustainable development goals. Meanwhile, tax collection in many countries is characterized by inequity, with high rates of evasion among corporations and the rich and disproportionate burdens on lower-income groups. Mobilizing domestic resources by broadening and deepening the tax base can lessen a country’s dependence on external funding—such as international aid, development assistance, and foreign borrowing—while also catalyzing broader improvements in government accountability, responsiveness, and institutional capacity. Focusing on domestic resource mobilization presents a valuable opportunity to support the World Bank’s twin goals of ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity. Yet it also poses new challenges as governments and their partners seek innovative ways to address longstanding barriers to increasing tax compliance.

The business environment rapidly changes with corresponding changes in tax policies. For taxpayers, the various measures that have been put in place and increased vigilance from the revenue authorities have heightened the need for tax compliance to fuel business continuity.  This has pushed many organizations to establish tax functions as one of the core functions since tax non-compliance has proofed a costly affair for many companies. Among the challenges associated with non-compliance includes unending tax disputes which have led to liquidation, unnecessary agency notices, huge tax demands and limited access to business opportunities especially where a tax compliance certificate is needed to close a business opportunity.

This seminar is geared towards highlighting key tax developments that have been put in place to promote tax compliance while taking into consideration the tax developments in the international space and the corresponding emerging issues on taxation. Specifically, the seminar will cover the following areas of tax as relates to tax compliance as well issues that are considered emerging in tax practice:

  • Conducting an Effective Tax Health Check for Organizations
  • Innovations in Tax Compliance and Current i-Tax Changes and Emerging Issues
  • The role of tax incentives and tax compliance – brief look at the Kenya tax incentive regime
