Introduction

The history of accounting is rich and can be traced back for thousands of years with the modern form of chartered accountants having originated in Scotland. In Kenya, the establishment of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya, ICPAK, in 1978 marked a crucial milestone and established accountancy as a formal profession. This was followed by significant progressive moves such as the adoption of IFRS, signing of double treaties and information sharing agreements with neighbouring revenue authorities.

The future of the accounting profession promises to be rich and complex, with numerous impeding disruptions. Smart and digital technologies have permeated business operations resulting in alternate currencies and money transfer methods. Technology advancements have also brought rise to big data and cloud computing. Away from technology, accounting profession now faces amassed pressure for transparency amid numerous scandals and claims of financial misconduct. The most recent development in the accounting field is the signing into law of the Finance Act 2018 which stands to greatly transform the profession in the coming years.
