Overview
The adoption of technology in the Kenyan financial services sector triggered an evolution that has spanned over the last few years. These changes continue with the goal of serving customers better and sustaining profitability. The sector is expected to morph further in the near future with the coming to effect of the new International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) number 9 on 1 January 2018.
IFRS 9 replaces International Accounting Standard (IAS) 39. This is in respect to the methodology used in providing for uncertainties in economic benefits of financial assets, loans or debts issued by financial institutions (impairment provisions on financial instruments). As a result, entities will have to recognize not only incurred credit losses but also losses that are expected to be incurred in future. This major change has caused significant worry in markets across the globe and the Kenyan market is no exception since affected entities are expected to prepare compliant financial reports going forward.
In response to the existing complexity of the financial reporting arrangements which have been occasioned by the introduction of the new standard, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya, ICPAK, has organised this professional forum to upraise delegates on the new developments and expected impact of the implementation of IFRS 9.
