Professional Forum: ADVANCING MS EXCEL SKILLS FOR ACCOUNTANTS
Date: 12TH JULY 2017
Venue: Coast Branch Office, Jubilee Arcade, 2nd Floor
1.0 Brief
Microsoft Excel remains a fundamental platform for accountants and finance professionals at all levels. It is regularly used for critical actions such as data analysis, budgeting, preparing forecasts and creating financial models. Accountants and Finance professionals encounter these activities on a daily basis and with knowledge of the right technical tools their responsibilities can be easily and efficiently met. Using advanced formulas in Excel, professionals can complete several days’ worth of computations in minutes. However, a lack of knowledge usually results in wastage of time trying to finish work, poor use of resources and under performance of the department.
Human resource personnel identify knowledge of Excel as a key differentiating factor that allows candidates to stand out. Job seekers with advanced Microsoft Excel Skills possess a competitive advantage as employers do not have to incur the cost of training them nor experience below par performance.
On the other hand, gaining expertise on Microsoft Excel is not difficult yet it requires time and exposure to the different manipulation, navigation and formatting methods among other capabilities. Ultimately, there is a huge rift between a beginner Microsoft Excel user and an advanced Excel savvy accountant. The difference results from consistent practice, either while performing work duties or as a personal initiative.
