Theme: “Addressing the Building Blocks for Excellent Financial Reporting in Cooperatives”

Financial reporting is the blood line of any organization since it is the means through which control and stewardship of an organization is exercised and evaluated. Cooperators rely on financial reports assist evaluate the affairs of their cooperative society as many of them are not involved in the day to day operations.  The landscape of financial reporting has changed dramatically in the last ten years.  Drivers of changes in financial reporting include changes International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRSs) and International Auditing Standards (ISAs) while others are occasioned by reviews of national legislation and regulations.  Newer technologies and more sophisticated performance management metrics have increased the amount and quality of information generated by businesses. The accounting standards environment has become more international, and governance continues to be a major issue for cooperatives.

The pace and complexity of running a cooperative society has also changed significantly. Many cooperatives today have fully fledged investment companies require more effort and diligence in complying with regulatory requirements. The added layers of complexity to fulfill requirements by the accounting profession and regulators may result in too technical a report with lesser use to the ordinary cooperative society member.  Acknowledging the immense contribution that cooperative societies have on our national economy, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya has organizes a three day conference in Kisumu to address issues pertinent to the cooperative movement in Kenya.  The key objectives of the training are:
