The role of Accountants in Cyber Security
Overview
Cyber security threats are increasing. In the digital age, data and information exposure ranks as one of the greatest risks facing organization- both public and private.
Cyber criminals are evolving and becoming more discreet and more co-ordinated in executing attacks against organizations information assets.
In Kenya, it has been claimed that Financial and related Institutions have lost close to Shs.30B in 2 years to cyber crime!
Accountants generate and control Data and Information that cyber criminals seek. Cyber security has continually evolved! And is no longer that technical jargon, best left to the IT guys but rather, something that the Accountant and his team has to immerse into and decipher.
This talk will enable you to apply the knowledge obtained to study further concepts in Information Security and Communicate and interpret ideas related to the principles of Information Security.
It is in this regard that the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) has organized the forum which will center on:
- Highlight an overview of the issues involved in the field of data and information security.
- Understand the basic principles of data and information security.
- Explain about being cyber aware i.e assessment of cyber protection, cyber awareness and the basic protection mechanisms for an organization’s information asset.
- Appreciate the role of teams in cyber safety- The management, audit, accounting and ICT teams.
- Understand basics disaster recovery planning concepts
- Understand the basics ISO/IEC 27032:2012 standard on cyber security

The session will be beneficial to members and non-members in the private and public sector, especially Associate members, Young professionals, Academia, Financial Reporting Consultants, Accountants in the public sector, Audit practitioners involved in the public and private sector, Scholars, Professionals from Financial services Sector (Banks, Insurance Companies and Investment companies etc.) and Representatives from regulatory bodies (SASRA, CBK, IRA etc.).
