INTRODUCTION
ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) is a regulatory body mandated to regulate and coordinate the activities of qualified and registered Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) in Kenya – including promoting research into the subject of accountancy and finance and related matters, publication of books, periodicals, journals and articles in connection therewith; promoting the international recognition of the Institute, advising the Examination Board on matters relating to examinations standards and policies, advising the Minister for Finance on matters relating to financial accountability in all sectors of the economy and setting and enforcing standards of professional practice such as accounting, auditing and ethical standards.
The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK or the Institute) was established by the Accountants Act Cap 573 laws of Kenya and amended by the Accountants Act no 15 of 2008, with the primary mandate to register, regulate and develop the accountancy profession in Kenya. ICPAK is a member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), the global umbrella body for the accountancy profession, and the Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA). Over its long history it has registered over 30,000 members. Its members work in diverse sectors of the economy as accountants, financial experts, auditors, and financial consultants.
ABOUT THE BOARD INDUCTION WORKSHOP
In fulfillment of its mandate to develop accountants, the Institute holds Continuous Development Programs in which participants interact with invited resource persons, share experiences, and develop policy proposals for consideration by government through the Ministry of Finance. In exercise of its mandate, ICPAK will hold a one-week Workshop on Board Induction from 14th to 18th August 2023 in Singapore, themed “Strengthening the Oversight Role of Boards through a Professional Induction Process”. Discussions arising from the workshop are planned to shed light on the challenges, opportunities, and lessons in enhancing transparency to foster economic growth and development in Africa. The discussions are also meant to shape the leadership landscape in the nation and world at large.
A Board Induction is a structured way of providing new board members with all the information and support they need to be confident and productive in their role. The aim is to help new members to understand the organization, the environment in which it operates, and their role in making the organization a success.
For any new board member, a learning curve comes with the territory. Just how steep that learning curve is and how quickly a new board member is able to contribute meaningfully to committee meetings, hinges directly on the quality of the induction and onboarding process. Understanding the business – its operations, strategies, risks, and management team as well as the responsibilities and culture of the board takes time. But a structured induction programme – including essential information and briefing materials, quality discussions with key people, and a “roadmap” for getting up to speed – can greatly accelerate a new board member’s integration and contribution to the committee’s work
Induction underpins the work of every management committee. It ensures that members have all the information they need to fulfil their role. It also creates a more level playing field for new members, ensuring they can effectively engage with members with greater experience.
Induction is one of the most practical ways of ensuring new Management Committee members understand their role, the workings of the organization and their relationship with others in and outside the organization. All organizations regardless of their size and purpose, should provide an induction program for new Board Members. This can be achieved by:
- Involving the full committee in agreeing on what the induction should cover and in discussing and approving any documentation provided at the induction
- Providing all members with an induction pack for reference and
- Setting aside part of a meeting to go through the planned induction with existing members and get their feedback on what was covered or items missing
The main objective of induction is to help new members to understand the organization, the environment in which it operates, and their role in making the organization a success.
It is against this backdrop that the Institute has organized a workshop to build the capacity of new Board Members while enabling knowledge sharing within the more experienced delegates across various sectors. This workshop is geared to provide a platform for leaders and new board members to share ideas and obtain knowledge on what is required in their new role as Board Members.
