THE INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS OF KENYA
(established under the Accountant Act, Laws of Kenya)
ACCOUNTANTS PROFESSIONAL ETHICS FORUM
DATE: 16th – 17th March, 2017
VENUE: Best Western Creekside Hotel, Mombasa
1.0 Overview
The accounting profession is fundamentally distinguished from other professions by the globally held ideal of integrity and impeccable ethical standing of its practitioners. Accountants are expected to genuinely safeguard interests of the public over personal or organizational interests. Unfortunately, this goodwill continues to be eroded by publicized cases of ethical misconduct such as fraud, misreporting and non-disclosures.
In the recent past, iconic organizations in Kenya have collapsed mainly due to ethical failures by accountants as well as auditors and senior executives. This credibility crisis has triggered debate on issues such as accounting and audit regulations, expectations of auditor independence and quality controls.
The connotation ‘a stitch in time saves nine’ comes to mind regarding the measures regulatory authorities and professional bodies have embarked on to reverse this distressing trend.
