Theme: Implication of recent changes on individual tax payers.
Overview
For fifteen straight years tax bands for individual income have remained unchanged until January 2017 when they were increased by 10% and are set to increase again by another 10% from January 2018 which effectively reduce the tax burden. Besides this notable change there has been a number of incentives extended to taxpayers especially the lower segment of the society. This changes include exemption of bonuses from taxation for low income earners, and twin incentives in real estate sector, increased relief on mortgage interest and taxation at lower rate of 20% for property developers.
These changes come against a backdrop of simplified tax system through i-Tax and recent stringent measures against tax evasion in the new tax procedures act notably the increased penalty for non-filing of returns.
Our aim is to explore the implication of these changes to the individual tax payer as well as the impact on revenue collection in the country.
