Welcome to the 10th Annual Management Accounting Conference. In this year, we combine our rich history of nine years in organizing this specialized conference. Our focus at the conference is to utilize the three days in equipping participants with practical insights on avenues improving business performance through insights and fact based decision making. It is paramount that Management Accountants communicate clearly based on objective reports so that those charged with governance can play their stewardship effectively in generating and sustaining long term value of their organizations be they private, public or public benefit
- About the Organizers – Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya
The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya is the Professional Accountancy Organization in Kenya established by the Accountants Act No. 15 of 2008 with a broad mandate to regulate and develop the accountancy profession. The Accountancy regulations call for life-long learning and members are expected to file their Continuous Professional Development Units totaling 40 Units each calendar year. In helping members remain agile and sharpen their skills in delivery of value at their workplaces, ICPAK organizes 220 Training Events each year. This event is critical to Management Accountants, Cost Accountants, Members of Finance & Strategy Committees, and Board Members since it aims at equipping participants with the skills to make sense of numbers for decision making.
- Learning Outcomes
Using a combination of plenary session and panel discussions, the conference participants will learn key issues around the following aspects;
- Navigating Risk Frameworks as a Management Accountant.
Without doubt risk management as a coordinated and documented process owned by business managers is a standard agenda in most management and board meetings. Many businesses have taken this up as part of prudent management or as a requirement by regulators. A key question that this presentation will seek to answer is the value contributed by active risk management strategies from the perspective of a Management Accountant.
- The Political and Economic Risks Impact on Businesses
The nation of Kenya is at the tail end of a political process that culminates in the renewal of mandates of political actors. Performance of the national economy has tended to depress at the time of elections thus lending questions as to its level of resilience. This presentation will analyze political risks and impact of economic trends with a focus on the context of Management Discussions in annual financial reports.
- Creating Better and Robust Reporting Systems
It is one thing knowing which reports and what information to include while preparing Management Reports and that forms half the story. The other bit is explaining the numbers to non-financial managers. The session will delve into the do’s and don’ts when making presentations to management.
- Strategic Cost Management
Management need measures and performance indicators on all these factors, and management accountants being the traditional information specialists of the organization, must provide these. Failure to do so may result in other information professionals bridging this gap, essentially rendering management accountants comparatively irrelevant. Drawing from practical examples, participants will learn the best practices in undertaking Strategic Cost Management in their organizations
- Data Analytics; Spreadsheets for the Management Accountant – Case Study
With the use of case study, conference participants will delve into how to use spreadsheets specifically excel in measuring and reporting performance. To make the most out of this presentation delegates are encouraged to come with a laptop or other data computing devices on which to run a spread sheet.
- KPIs – Key Performance Indicators – Which way for true performance reporting
The focus on measuring performance has never been higher; the reasons are varied including the need to assure citizens of improved lives as will be the case in public sector and increasing shareholder wealth as is the case in private sector entities. Key questions that will be tackled in this presentation include; how to choose a true KPI that measures performance, the frequency and intensity of performance reporting as well as trends and challenges in performance reporting including the 360 degree appraisals.
- Managing Todays Workforce
So much has changed in the works place and a lot more trends and shifts are happening including but not limited to a younger, less loyal, flexi working employees.
