THEME: “Thought Leadership on KRA’s iTax”
Venue: ICPAK Coast Branch Office, Jubilee Arcade, 1st Floor, Rm 16B
1.0 Background
Over the last couple of years, the Kenya Revenue Authority has drummed up the need for Kenyan individuals and businesses all over the country to file their annual tax returns. This year, the authority struck off manual returns, restricting Kenyans to an online platform christened iTax. Failure to file returns online is now punishable by stiff penalties.
While these measures hold a promise of prosperity for the country by ensuring availability of public funds, the move presents numerous challenges to both accounting professionals and laymen. One of the challenges is the complicated nature of the system, which necessitates the use of an excel worksheet that is then uploaded to the KRA website. In some rural areas of Kenya, residents lack access to the technology required to do this while others simply are not aware of the requirement yet they will be penalized for lack of filing.
2.0 Learning Objectives
As a regulatory body for the accounting profession, ICPAK has undertaken to steer conversation on the new tax returns requirements with the goal of tackling questions such as:
- What contributions can CPAs make to iTax? How would these contributions be handled by KRA?
- What alterations, if any, can be made to the system to optimize it?
- How should Kenyans of all walks be sensitized and educated on iTax?
- What best practices should CPAs adopt in advising and filing taxes for clients?
- What can Kenya learn from countries with advanced online tax filing systems that can be a yardstick for this process?
