OVERVIEW

Accounting is a precision and accuracy-demanding profession. It is also a dynamic industry, with new legislation, technology, and tools released on a regular basis. With so much to keep track of, it’s no surprise that accountants are constantly looking for new ways to stay up to date on industry advancements. The accounting profession, like many others, is conducting a self-evaluation of what the future holds. The rapid development of technology, the workings of the global economy, and the dynamic business atmosphere that requires more from professionals appear to be casting the future into doubt. New technologies are currently performing much of the heavy lifting roles for accountants, and some roles are on the verge of becoming obsolete. This calls for a relook into the traditional roles the accountant has been playing and usher in a new era of value creation and decision-making support.

Artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning and big data analytics are redefining the accountant of the future. Traditional repetitive tasks are being automated to enable the accountant to focus on more strategic and value enhancing duties. This calls for upskilling by professional accountants to fit into the new environment and deliver on organizational mandates more efficiently and with a great sense of precision. The current operating environment has also necessitated constant changes in standards affecting the profession, for instance, the current climatic changes have ushered in new standards, IFRS S1 and S2 which create a knowledge gap for accountants and an opportunity to offer expertise in the field for those who embrace the change.

Beyond the work arena, individuals need to foster a spirit of being highly effective at a personal level. This calls for adoption and dropping of some habits as shared by Stephen Covey in his book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. In light of this, ICPAK has organized the third edition of the mentorship program for associate members with a view to preparing them for what lies ahead in the profession. The program will focus on:

1. Digital Transformation & the Role of Accounting and Finance Professionals in the New Dispensation.
2. Book Review: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey – Lessons for Professional Accountants
3. The Transition to a Chief Value Officer- Mindshift and Opportunities for Professional Accountants
4. Overview of Recent Changes in Standards Affecting the Accounting Profession
– Overview of IFRS S1 & S 2 and its implications
5. New Technology Frontiers for Future-Fit Accountants:
– Big Data Analytics
