THE INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS OF KENYA
(Established under the Accountant Act, Laws of Kenya)
Forensic Audit Seminar-Central Rift
Date: 28th – 29th July 2022
Venue: Merica Hotel, Nakuru
Time: 9 am – 4 pm

OVERVIEW

Due to increasing globalization, there has been a translational growth in transactions and diversification of economic activities. These developments have subsequently led to enormous opportunities for economic and financial crimes, which have gained a global concern. These events have necessitated the need for forensic interventions hence the reason why forensic auditing and accounting are gaining fast paced precedence. The harsh global environment has also made it possible for the forensic auditors and accountants to establish controls and procedures to aid the detection, prevention and prompt response to such kind of fraud.

Various measures have been put in place to prevent and detect crime in many organisations, but employees and external fraudsters have not been deterred by this from taking part in fraudulent practices in organisations. Fraud is an act that occurs within a social set up which has a big impact on the economy, individuals and corporations. According to PwC’s 2018 Global Economic Crime and Fraud Survey 49% of global organizations indicate that they have been victims of fraud and economic crime. This is up from 36% in 2016. Every organization, no matter how vigilant, is vulnerable to blind spots which usually only become apparent with hindsight. Shading light onto those blinds spots as early as possible can vastly enhance fraud-fighting efforts.

Where is the money being spent? Now more than ever, Organisations are using more powerful technology and vibrant data analytics tools to fight fraud. Organisations have equally embraced whistle blower programmes and taking steps to keep leadership in the loop. The big questions then would be, do these measures represent a genuine shift to more proactive approaches to fraud and corruption? Or are they just rear-guard actions driven principally by enhanced anti-bribery/ anti-corruption legislation and increasingly globalised forms of enforcement?

Fraudulent activities are costly, and it is estimated that trillions are lost worldwide due to fraudulent financial statements, asset misappropriation and corruption. This therefore requires that there be an active involvement of forensic accountants in all stages of risk assessment and developments of audit plans. This will lead to success and early detection and therefore mitigation of these crimes thereby reducing any greater losses in the organisation and economy at large.

The following key topics among others will be discussed in the Seminar:

  1. Scope, mandates and objectives of Forensic Audit?
  2. Governance & Forensic Audit?
  3. Forensic Audit techniques?
  4. Data analytics to support the investigation process.
