OVERVIEW

IFRS 9 Financial Instruments is a standard which came into effect on 1st January 2018. It specifies how an entity should classify and measure financial assets, financial liabilities, and some contracts to buy or sell non-financial items. IFRS 9 requires an entity to recognize a financial asset or a financial liability in its statement of financial position when it becomes party to the contractual provisions of the instrument

This training intends to enhance the participants’ understanding of the principles and the concepts underlying IFRS 9 and explain adaptation of IFRS 9 in financial reporting. It will cover:-

  • Overview to IFRS 9 classification and measurement impairment models (Apply the principles for classification, initial recognition and subsequent measurement of financial assets and financial liabilities in IFRS 9)
  • Summary of key issues in IFRS 9
  • Benefits and challenges of implementation of IFRS 9
  • Classification and reclassification: Classification of debt instruments and equity instruments cash flow characteristics
  • Determine the accounting for derivatives and embedded derivatives
  • Compute the effective interest rate and apply the effective interest method for measurement of financial instruments at amortized cost
  • Apply the expected credit loss model and calculate impairment losses for financial assets
  • Obtain an overview of hedge accounting and analyze the requirements in IFRS 9
