Overview
Taxation is a critical element for economic growth and development. Taxpayers are obliged to pay their tax due, in full and on time, as this is the only way governments can generate the funding to provide the public services all citizens depend on, and in this sense, tax is part of the social contract of any civilized society. While the primary purpose of taxation is to raise revenue for the support of the government, taxation is also often employed as a devise for regulation by means of which certain effects or conditions envisioned by the government may be achieved.
Tax systems perform multiple roles: raising revenue, redistributing wealth, and regulating behaviour. Elected governments therefore have the right to use taxation in certain circumstances in pursuance of agreed social policies. The globalization of business means that each country should ensure its tax rates are competitive and its regime user-friendly since tax is a key factor in ensuring the overall attractiveness of a location to mobile capital.
Disruptions, in their various nature, inevitably have tax implications, some of which are immediately obvious and some of which are long term. During any disruption, it’s important to carry out a detailed assessment of the tax implications, the additional tax obligations that may need to be paid, and the compliance processes in place to address the changes. Understanding the sensitivity of your business model and tax compliance measures to various disruptive scenarios is essential to allow you to be on the front foot.
The Taxation Masterclass therefore seeks to explore the current tax regime and expose participants to important tenets of tax laws and practice.
