Time: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
THEME: ENHANCED TECHNIQUES OF COMBATING FRAUD IN THE DIGITAL SPACE
OVERVIEW
Organizations world over continue to record spectacular losses owing to fraud perpetrated by insiders (employees) and outsiders (customers, suppliers and other parties). Such happenings expose organisations’ lack of preparedness and capacity to mitigate fraud-related risks. Furthermore, the proliferation of technology has also become a double-edged sword- propelling organizations to greatness while at the same time presenting unprecedented opportunities to fraudsters. The current technological landscape is evolving at a faster pace than organizations can keep up with, in matters fraud prevention and detection. Ironically, some organizations have leveraged on technology as a defence mechanism against fraud, while to others, technology has played as a big facilitator of fraud.
Further, the unprecedented situation which affected organizations around the world earlier this year led to the widespread presence of remote working and virtual business. Adapting to these circumstances meant that the workplace has changed – from business development and supply chains to work management and social interactions. All aspects of business are adapted to be undertaken through technological solutions this can only get more common with time.
Some key themes for organizations and individuals to ponder are: Is there a proper understanding of the technology in place? Is this technology secure and what risks does it pose? Which departments/functions/operations are more exposed and which ones are simpler to secure? Given the global and interconnected nature of technology, how can the organization stay ahead of those who wish to cause harm, and who can be anywhere in the world?
