BEYOND MANAGEMENT SUMMIT

Theme: Harnessing Business and Human Development in the Region

Date: 17th – 21st July 2018

Venue: Golden Tulip Addis, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

TIME: 9am to 4pm

1.0  OVERVIEW

Reports on Africa indicate that the continent is one of the fastest growing regions of the world, second to East Asia. In fact, of the ten fastest growing economies in the world, six are in Africa. African organizations therefore need to compete not only within Africa but also globally, to sustain this kind of performance. Further, for management research to be relevant and impactful, it must look at what really happens within African organizations, how they achieve high performance and what makes them high-performing.

Closer home, the world is changing and so is the workplace! Management is about achieving and maintaining standards in key areas such as quality, productivity and profitability. Managers operate in fast changing environments and must regularly update their skills to meet the challenges of a dynamic global market and a more diverse workforce. Today managers will therefore be expected to learn how to manage and lead a multi-generational workforce and acquire generation specific team leadership and management skills.  As alluded earlier, more focus is placed on people’s performance and productivity and this brings on board the subject of talent acquisition and management. Amongst other things, managers will require the confidence to manage multi-generational teams, the creativity to measure staff performance on outputs rather than inputs, and a high degree of creative strategic thinking, process improvement techniques and mentoring skills.

To equip participants with the requisite survival and growth skills, ICPAK has organized this regional summit to unpack this management agenda to ensure they keep pace with changes happening in the society, the market and the workplace. Participants will also have an opportunity to network with business leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs and peers in the region.

2.0  THEMATIC AREAS:

  • Africa’s thirst for Great Leadership.

Over 50 years post-independence, the continent still struggles with basic canons of democracy, good governance and human rights. With globalization transforming the world into a web-village, new challenges have emerged; the most being a youth bulge.  Positively, these challenges provide opportunities for Africa to leverage on and chart new paths of progress as an equal partner in the global arena. These same opportunities however may remain unrealized if continental leadership is not addressed.  Dr. John C. Maxwell quoted ‘everything rises and falls with leadership.’ The visionary leadership the continent thirsts for can only be achieved by building strong institutions free from corruption and enshrined on good governance practices.

  • The Changing Workplace: People performance, Flexibility and Creativity.

Most corporations, especially public entities, are grappling with a problem of the ageing workforce who will not retire in the traditional manner. Of concern also is the issue on managing a cross-cultural workforce. Additionally, the rise of shareholder value as the primary measure of company performance and the growing influence of the corporate governance movement have had a dramatic impact on the way top management think and act.

  • Addressing Institutional Culture.

Culture is the core building block of sustainable business growth; regardless of the size of the organization. It is documented that if leaders don’t direct a corporation towards the acquisition, embodiment and maintenance of a distinct culture, a default culture will emerge; complete with negative connotations. Culture starts and ends with how a corporation hires.

  • Reaping from Human Capital/Human Capital Management

In today’s business world, it is the human assets that differentiate a corporation from its competitors. It is the workers’ collective input that foster growth or failure of a company. How then is this resource engaged and led?

  • Overcoming Leadership Challenges.

Professor Jean Pierre said ‘education has a much broader and deeper meaning; it is not confined to time or space, it is an attitude, a constant search for learning founded on an insatiable curiosity.’ To overcome these challenges as an executive, you need to read more, seek more information and use it more to your advantage.

  • Workplace Diversity and Inter-dependency.

Diversity lays emphasis on acceptance and respect; it goes beyond racial and ethnic backgrounds. Most corporations place more emphasis on affirmative action and equal employment opportunity to comply with policy requirements at the expense of diversity. What is unique and different about the teams you lead?

  • Demystifying Leadership Myths – Panel Discussion

Karen Kimsey-House observes that younger employees are not satisfied with just a ‘job,’ they want work that allows them to be involved and included in decisions. However, traditional command and control leadership models remain unable to adapt to the need for more collaboration and inclusion. Until we move beyond some of the long-cherished myths about what it means to be a leader, it will be hard to truly generate any desirable change.

  • Addressing Public Finance Management Challenges in the Region

Strong Public Financial Management (PFM) systems are crucial in enhancing efficiency in service delivery and achievement of Agenda 2063 for Africa and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Several countries in the continent have instituted various public finance management reforms and participants will be privileged to learn and benchmark on this agenda of PFM.
