Change makers and early adopters will shape everyone’s view on the future of the accountancy profession. Gigantic technological, political and socio-economic changes are sweeping the globe. The question however; in the wake of all these happenings, is the accountancy profession adequately positioned to lead and make an impactful difference? The Institute is thus committed to supporting the profession in accessing business and professional growth opportunities to realize some milestones. There is general consensus in creating collaborations as a way to improve the accountancy value chain and to that effect, ICPAK has organized yet again the 2nd Chapter Seminar – Australia to dialogue with experts on the future of the profession.
2.0 Thematic Areas of Discussion.
- The Global Professional Accountant: Addressing the Brain Drain.
With globalization, professionals are at a risk of brain drain as most institutions work closely with affiliates around the globe. This session will discuss the element of skills transfer – process, experience and opportunities.
- Big Data, Analytics, Business Intelligence (BI) and Innovation.
In the information era, enormous amounts of data have become available to decision makers. As such, big data analytics and BI are breakthrough technological developments not very conversant with many. How do institutions then translate this potential into actual social and economic value. This session will delve into understanding these concepts.
- The Future of Corporate Management – Managing the Transition.
The corporate landscape is complex with politics playing a key role in the transition journey. This is a journey that takes a great deal of thought and action in corporate boardrooms whose traditional business models are under threat. How do we navigate the journey from CFO to CEO?
- Convergence to IFRS and Global Consistency.
Convergence to a single set international accounting standard contributes to comparability and consistency, supports global financial stability and is a matter of public interest. This session will give an update on the latest standards by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB).
- Building Secure Environments for Skilled Human Capacity in both the Public and Private Sectors.
For most countries, to achieve and maintain the trajectory, there is need to implement reforms that would strengthen institutions and develop human capacity. This is an effort to encourage transparency and accountability in the use of public resources. Such reforms would address the limited capacity that hinders implementation of projects and contribute to reduction in the reported level of leakage of public resources. We shall assess the contribution of development partners in strengthening institutions.
- Public Sector Governance and Reporting – Lessons from Australia.
- Creating a culture for good governance.
- Effective governance of data and technology.
- Applying and reformulating governance framework guidelines.
This session will focus on effective public-sector governance and how this contributes to improved decision making and efficient use of resources. It will explore various options on how professionals can leverage on the framework to inspire, implement and assure good governance; including risk management and internal control.
- Dealing with Financial Crime and Money Laundering: Lessons from Australia
Recently, we’ve seen a growing number of highly publicized money laundering scandals. Issues of illicit financial flows, off-shore accounts for stashing stolen cash and terrorist financing have become serious problems in many emerging financial services sectors. In 2009, Kenya enacted the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering legislation that apart from providing an anti-money laundering framework also established the Financial Reporting Centre (FRC). Participants will be exposed to a comparative analysis of mechanisms, programs and cooperative pronouncements and enforcement steps focused on combating money laundering, terrorist financing and related financial crime.
- Accountancy and whistle blowing
Whistle-blowing is making a disclosure of a malpractice in the public interest. This phenomenon has been widely embraced as mechanism of combating maladministration, corruption and inefficiencies in the public and private sectors. Given their nature of work, accountants face ethical dilemma of confidentiality in their consideration to whistle blow. These requirements raise the questions as to whether an audit firm or an individual staff of the audit firm can blow the whistle on his/her client (s) without breaching “confidentiality undertakings and; whether he or she can avoid the temptation of “self-interest” (to earn a bounty) in whistle blowing. The topic will focus on areas, strategies and protection of accountants who whistle blow.
