THE INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS OF KENYA
(established under the Accountant Act, Laws of Kenya)
3RD PROFESSIONAL FORUM
Theme: The Citizen’s Role in the Fight Against Graft
Venue: Hilton Hotel, Nairobi
Date: 25th September 2019
Time: 5:30pm to 7:30pm
1.0 Overview
Kenya has been rated among the world’s most corrupt countries, the vice cutting across the public and private sector. Corruption scandals of monumental proportions continue to dominate the headlines characterized by wanton looting with impunity. Experts estimate that a whooping one third of the country’s budget is lost to graft. Successful business empires in the private sector have fallen victims to the plunderers, being left at the mercy of receivers and prayers of their employees.
The Government has put in a high-spirited campaign against the vice which remains a campaign since the war is far from being won. Stepped up efforts in the fight against corruption have led to the arrest of senior officers and suspension of all government procurement and accounting officers. After all the rhetoric and drama, the public remains on tiptoe to witness the first casualties of the war.
All eyes are on public watchdog organizations and begs the question “under whose watch is it happening”? It is against this backdrop that ICPAK has organized a professional talk where its panel of experts will tackle the big question of “The Role of the Accountant in the Fight Against Corruption.” Question is: Is the accountant a Watchdog, Toothless dog or Predator?
